Oktoberfest Triathlon

Sunday I did my first triathlon!! In one sentence…it was so awesome and I am totally hooked now!

We were up around 4:30 and out the door by 5:30 to head up to Longmont. We pulled into Union Reservoir and started by racking our bikes and setting up our stuff in the transition area. IMG_3384[1]

Joe and our friend Marc were racing too, so we were all able to set up right next to each other. IMG_3385[1]

We picked up our timing chips and got marked. Then it was time to get the wetsuits on and head down to the beach for the pre-race meeting.IMG_3389[1]

This race was capped at 500 and all 3 of us were scheduled in different waves. Joe went first with his age group, then Marc with his and finally I was in the very last wave which was reserved for “first timers”. I was pretty nervous about the swim and thought this wave would be a little better for me.IMG_3387[1]

The swim has always been the thing I most freaked out about with doing a tri, but I ended up doing really well. I started far back in the pack, but had made my way to the very front by the end of the 1/2 mile!

My transition to the bike was a little slow, but I felt great and the 13 mile course had nice views of the mountains (although pretty hilly!).

When I got off the bike and back into the transition area, I got totally lost and couldn’t find my stuff! …..rookie mistake 😉

Eventually I headed out on the run and cruised on the out and back 5k course. Coolest thing was that I was never passed by anyone while running! I felt really strong for it being the last leg of the tri!IMG_3397[1]

Here’s my final times for each of the legs and overall and I am actually pretty pleased! I expected to move much slower and struggle with the swim, but I totally surprised myself.IMG_3393[1]

Joe and Marc did great too and it was such a fun experience to do it all together!IMG_3392[1]

We headed to a brewery in Boulder afterward for some well deserved food & beer 🙂IMG_3395[1]

I am looking for an Olympic distance to do in the spring, but for now, all my focus is going toward the marathon in November!
