4 days…just 4 days until I do what will most likely be the HARDEST and SCARIEST race of my life. I’ve had the countdown on the right ——> up for a while, but I haven’t written much about my training on here.
This Saturday is the Leadville Heavy Half in Leadville, Colorado. Just a little breakdown of the race stats for you….
- distance – 15.46 miles
- start elevation – 10,200 feet
- elevation gain – 3720 feet
- turn around elevation – 13,185 feet
It is a trail marathon that runs up a mountain and back down. It’s rocky and rooty and there are times the grade is so steep that running is not even an option and you are forced to hike. Here’s a look at the course profile so you can be as terrified for me as I am right now:
Joe and I are attempting to tackle this together, but I think we both have a really legitimate fear of our first ever DNF. My mom is flying in for the race and she’s actually volunteering, so I will get to stop and see her at one of the aid stations! We also have a friend coming in from NYC that is going to attempt it too.
It will take me at least 4 hours to finish, but I am really just hoping to finish, period. I couldn’t care less about the time. I also would like to not die. ha.
I don’t feel like I trained enough at that altitude or that I did enough steep trail running, but I am just going to hope what I have done was enough and I can push through.
My plan this week is just two short runs, and a couple yoga sessions. TONS of stretching and foam rolling. I am also trying to focus really hard on nutrition. I’ve upped the protein and carbs this week and am trying to get in as much water as my body will accept.
4 days to go….SEND POSITIVE THOUGHTS!!!!!!! 🙂
What’s the hardest race you’ve ever done? How did you mentally prepare for the challenge?
