let the freak-out begin

4 days…just 4 days until I do what will most likely be the HARDEST and SCARIEST race of my life.  I’ve had the countdown on the right ——> up for a while, but I haven’t written much about my training on here.

This Saturday is the Leadville Heavy Half in Leadville, Colorado. Just a little breakdown of the race stats for you….

  • distance – 15.46 miles
  • start elevation – 10,200 feet
  • elevation gain – 3720 feet
  • turn around elevation – 13,185 feet

It is a trail marathon that runs up a mountain and back down. It’s rocky and rooty and there are times the grade is so steep that running is not even an option and you are forced to hike. Here’s a look at the course profile so you can be as terrified for me as I am right now:

Joe and I are attempting to tackle this together, but I think we both have a really legitimate fear of our first ever DNF. My mom is flying in for the race and she’s actually volunteering, so I will get to stop and see her at one of the aid stations! We also have a friend coming in from NYC that is going to attempt it too.

It will take me at least 4 hours to finish, but I am really just hoping to finish, period. I couldn’t care less about the time. I also would like to not die. ha.

I don’t feel like I trained enough at that altitude or that I did enough steep trail running, but I am just going to hope what I have done was enough and I can push through.

My plan this week is just two short runs, and a couple yoga sessions. TONS of stretching and foam rolling. I am also trying to focus really hard on nutrition. I’ve upped the protein and carbs this week and am trying to get in as much water as my body will accept.

4 days to go….SEND POSITIVE THOUGHTS!!!!!!! 🙂

What’s the hardest race you’ve ever done? How did you mentally prepare for the challenge?

  1. Oh my gosh, wow! That is one serious race! I’m glad that you won’t be running it alone. Not that you couldn’t handle it, but having someone to support you and cheer you on be really nice. Is there at least a good view at the top? 🙂

    • The views at the top are suppose to be breathtaking (figuratively and literally at that altitude- ha!). I will have my phone so I can take lots of pictures…assuming I make it to the top that is!!

  2. Girl, you are going to do awesome!! Sending many prayers your way ❤ ❤

  3. Wow, this sounds intense…BUT you will do great! Have faith! 🙂

  4. You will be awesome! Is there athlete tracking available? I am so excited for you! Just run and have fun! And don’t die. 🙂 good luck!

    • Thanks lady!!!!
I’m not sure if this one has tracking available…I will post on FB or instagram if it does. If not, I will definitely do updates via FB 🙂

  5. This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen, and you’re over halfway there. You signed up, you’re trained, and you’re ready! If I was living out there, I’d totally do this with you. I think you’re going to love it, and I’ll be thinking about you on Saturday! Post up on instagram so I can check out how you do! In any scenario, I don’t see anything less than a wonderful and successful race, whatever that entails. HOW COOL and what a unique and exciting challenge! Glad you and Joe are doing it together, plus another friend. That’ll make the mentally trying aspects of it a lot more manageable. Woo! I will send positive, exciting and WOO HOO thoughts your way all week Lish! This is awesome and amazing. 🙂 You’ll be my hero when you finish, is that as good as the medal you’re going to get? 🙂

    • That’s way better than the medal! haha. I will definitely keep everyone updated on instagram, so be sure to tune in!
I know you would run it with me if you lived here, and I’m pretty sure that would make it WAY more fun than it’s going to be 🙂

      • AH! It’s going to be fun, really, and I’m mostly jealous now. But, of course, you’re sick of me telling you how awesome your life is so I’ll calm down. Really, I think it’ll be an awesome experience.

  6. Wow, how have we not heard more about this! You’re a rockstar and going to be awesome. You won’t dnf, you guys will have fun together and totally destroy that mountain. Love that you’ll get to see your mom, so awesome!

    • There is a full marathon too, but that would seriously be insanity..
Thanks for the encouragement!!!! I really need it right now 🙂
SO EXCITED to see my mama!!

  7. Oh my goodness. You will totally be fine, I know you will. It is grueling but if you pace yourself and slow down when you need to, you will complete it. Add some watermelon this week, works for me when I look for the extra hydration.

  8. Ah go girl you’re going to do awesome!!

  9. How super cool your mama is volunteering! And I love that your honey is tackling this with you. Can’t wait to hear how it goes!! Positive thoughts your way!!
