camping season kick-off

Hello! It feels like a Monday, but it’s actually Tuesday…awesome 🙂

How was your Memorial Day Weekend? I just want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to all who serve our country.

Joe and I spent the weekend backpacking through Rocky Mountain National Park. We set out on Saturday and trekked about 5 miles into the back country where we set up camp. IMG_3009[1]DSCN0119[1]DSCN0125[1]DSCN0136[1]DSCN0126[1]

As you can see, there was still quite a bit of snow! We crossed a river and got to our camp site at Big Meadows just before dinner time. DSCN0131[1]DSCN0130[1]DSCN0128[1]

We quickly set up our tent, purified some water and then got dinner cooking! DSCN0132[1]IMG_2992[1]IMG_2995[1]DSCN0147[1]

There was a moose moseying about on the other side of the meadow, but he was too far away for a good picture. However, this little scavenger kept running at us and trying to steal our dinner!!IMG_3007[1]

We turned in just before sunset and were up bright and early the following morning. It was a freezing cold night (somewhere in the low 30’s) so it took a while to thaw ourselves out once the sun came up. Then we set off for a day hike to some nearby waterfalls. We planned about a 10 mile hike round trip. IMG_3013[1]DSCN0137[1]DSCN0145[1]We hit some serious snow and got a little frustrated with it. After about 4 miles it became impossible to even see the trail, so we decided to turn around and trek it back to camp. DSCN0139[1]DSCN0138[1]

We got back in time to hang out in the sun for a bit and dry our socks and shoes. Then we started to cook some dinner. DSCN0146[1]

We climbed into the tent a bit earlier because the clouds were covering the sun and we were getting pretty chilly outside. After quite a few hands of rummy, we both fell asleep 🙂   DSCN0134[1]IMG_3008[1]

The next morning we packed up and made the 5 mile hike out of the woods and back to the visitors center…awesome trip overall 🙂

When we got back to Denver,  a long shower was in order and then some  real food!! IMG_3018[1]

Sonoma salad with salmon from the Ale House along with a couple of beers totally hit the spot!

How did you spend the weekend?

  1. Wow! You guys are so hard core! I enjoy camping but not that’s some major camping! We like the drive up to your camp spot in the summer months type of camping 🙂 Looks like a fun adventure though!

  2. I love playing rummy- great game! I’ve been staying positive today by reminding myself it’s Tuesday, not Monday too!

  3. Oh my! I want to go camping now! You are so adventurous! I love it! No, this isn’t the beach, but it’s another totally wonderful weekend you had! Plus, it’s like, exercise without trying. Win!

  4. wow. I am in awe. A former New Yorker out there hiking and roughing it (in my opinion) in the wilderness. Looks like you had a great time! I love seeing pictures like these because they are so out of the ordinary routine.

    • Well, I will keep the pictures coming! It was definitely roughing it…no bathroom or running water for 3 days…yea…Can I say again how amazing my shower was last night? haha

  5. You guys go so hard. I love it! I hope you won Rummy girl!! joshua and I have been planning a few hands throughout the week.. so far were tied 2-2 lol

  6. Wow, what a fun weekend getaway. You guys are troopers, I wish I was that good at camping. You must have some really warm gear to be able to survive those cold nights. I’m such a wimp when it comes to cold.

    • We have warm gear, but it was definitely still chilly! The worst was the trying to make me get out of my sleeping bag in the morning…it was a nice warm cacoon. haha
