15 miles + family time

Saturday and Sunday were also spent in Michigan with my family. I rearranged my planned workouts so I could take a rest day Saturday before my long run Sunday.

I slept in a bit and then headed to get a massage….heaven….need to make it a priority to do this more often!                            IMG_2934[1]

My mom and I did a lot of hanging out in the sun and getting her ready for her upcoming trip to Italy!                                                                    IMG_2947[1]

Eventually we made our way downtown to do a little shopping and grab a bite. We stopped at a little sidewalk cafe for a drink and some appetizers to split.      IMG_2946[1]IMG_2936[1]IMG_2945[1]

Then, we picked up some food and drove out to my brothers to play with my nephews. First day on the new big boy bike!!                                        IMG_2951[1]IMG_2954[1]IMG_2955[1]

Eventually we all got hungry and my brother got the grill going. There is just something about food on the grill that tastes so good…do you agree?      IMG_2952[1]IMG_2953[1]

After story time with the boys, my mom and I headed home and went to bed early so I would be well rested for the planned long run in the morning.                IMG_2958[1]

For some reason I had a hard time sleeping, and felt the opposite of “rested” when I woke up. I set my alarm for 6 with the hopes of being out the door by 7 to beat the heat.  I didn’t get out the door until after 7:30, but hoped I would still be able to get ahead of the heat. I. Was. Wrong. It was already pretty warm and there was the humidity of Michigan I am just not use to anymore.

The first 7 miles went pretty well. I felt good, was hydrating properly and managed to get some shade every now and then.                                                     IMG_2898[1]

I had some sport beans around mile 9, but was starting to get extremely hot, which I do not tolerate well. I tried to keep pushing, but had to walk for about half a mile during mile 13 to cool myself down. Once I did, I picked it back up and finished strong. Kind of annoyed about the walking since I have never done that on a long run, but I think it’s what my body needed and probably best that I listened.                                                                                                    IMG_2961[1]

After the run, I showered, had a snack and made a trip to REI to see what was on sale. Didn’t get anything, but always like to look around 🙂                      IMG_2963[1]

Then my mom and I headed to a Arbor Brewing Company in downtown Ann Arbor to meet my sister (the Doctor!!! That’s not getting old for me yet- haha) and her fiance for lunch. It was great to be able to spend a little time with them alone since there were so many people and such chaos at the party on Friday. IMG_2967[1]IMG_2965[1]

We said our goodbyes and I headed back to my mom’s to pack. Then it was off to the airport and back to Denver. It was an amazing weekend filled with family time, but I was excited to get back to Joe too 🙂                                IMG_2969[1]

This is my last week of work with the kids!!!!

Do you beat yourself up when a run doesn’t quite go your way?

  1. That salmon looked delicious, I loved grilled salmon, tastes so good. Way to go on your run! You still had a great time, but I get it. When I don’t anticipate walking and have to I always get mad at myself.

    • The salmon was amazing…I am craving it again right now…so good on the grill!
      I wasn’t so concerned about the time- although I did think i would go a bit faster on the run. haha…I need to learn not to get annoyed with myself when I am just listening to my body.

  3. Nice job on the run! Running long distances in the heat is not easy, but stay consistent and after a while your body gets acclimated to it! Also helps to stay hydrated and take extra electrolytes in! You are rocking it!!

  4. I hate running in the heat (and the cold lol)…I am never thrilled when my runs don’t go as planned, however, it happens and I just deal and look forward to my next. For my long runs lately, I have taken the approach of whatever happens happens. I set out for a certain number of miles (10 minimum) and if I need to go slow, I do. If I need to stop for more water or bathroom, I do. As it gets hotter and hotter here, I think this is the best approach for me in order to continue the longer runs (even if I do set out as early as possible)

  5. It took me a long time to stop being so hard on myself for any run whether it was a long run or speed work…and yes to realize that when the weather changes (especially to heat) it takes a bit to adapt. I lived in miami for 4 years and it was a whole new ballgame for pacing!

  6. I used to always beat myself up when a run didn’t go as planned, but you just have to look at it like it’s not your last run, there will be hundreds more. So really, what’s the point of getting upset?!

    Glad you enjoyed your vacation with the family, but I’m happy your back home w/ Joe ❤

  7. That caprese salad is gorgeous! Tomato, basil, and moz is one of the all time best combos. Family time is the best 🙂

  8. 15 miles is so awesome! I know how you feel though about beating yourself up when things don’t go as planned. I do that more when I’m training for a race but since I haven’t trained for one in a year now, I’ve been much easier on myself 🙂 Looks like you had a great time with your family 🙂

    • Such a great time! I think the only reason I got a little upset about the run is because I am training for a race…otherwise i would have been totally happy with that kind of mileage! I’m also totally over it now…my annoyance never lasts very long. haha
