Friday Food Fun: Electrolytes

Not sure if this really falls under the “food fun” topic, but since I recently wrote an article for AZ Central on the best electrolytes to consume after a a session of Bikram Yoga.

Electrolytes are minerals found in blood and bodily fluids that carry an electric charge. They affect the amount of water in the blood, muscle function and blood acidity. The most important electrolytes are magnesium, potassium and sodium. Your body needs the right amount of all of these electrolytes for the brain and muscles to function properly.

  • Bananas, oranges, grapes, berries and grapefruits are all great sources of potassium.
  • Add a packet of electrolyte mix to a bottle of water or drink an electrolyte- enhanced water. Coconut water is also an excellent way to replenish sodium levels after Bikram.
  • Foods such as nuts, beans and whole grains are great sources of magnesium. Fruits like bananas, apricots and avocados also have a high magnesium content.

Soooo……make sure you are getting in those electrolytes. This is important after any workout in hot weather or where you may be sweating a lot.

  1. Happy Friday girl! I actually think I am doing a lot better with the whole electrolyte replenishment thing now, lol. I enjoy oranges, berries, nuts, whole grains, avocados, and I also use the Hammer Endurolyte pills. 🙂 Congrats again on the article!

  3. I love coconut water and smart water. I actually got a bag of dehydrated coconut water a few weeks ago from Navitas naturals and have been adding that to my smart water after a sweaty workout. Double the electrolytes!

  4. I usually make some sort of protein shake with coconut water, bananas, and protein powder.
