Did that make you think of the commercial from the 90’s?

I have been out of chia seeds for over a week now and I am going through withdrawals! Every time I’ve gone to Fairway to pick some up, they have been totally out! People in my neighborhood must be catching on to the chia craze 😉

Most of you already eat chia seeds, but just in case you don’t know the benefits of these amazing little guys, let me fill you in!

Why is it a “superfood”?

Chia seeds have:

-2 times the protein of any other seed or grain.

-5 times the calcium of milk, plus boron, which is a trace mineral that helps transfer calcium into your bones.

-2 times the amount of potassium as bananas.

-3 times the reported antioxidant strength of blueberries.

-3 times more iron than spinach.

-Copious amounts of omega-3 and omega-6, which are essential fatty acids (one ounce of these power-packing seeds contains more than eight times the amount of omega-3 fatty acid found in a similar measure of wild salmon).

AMAZING, right?!!?

There are many different ways to consume chia and you can find a slew of recipes by googling it. Joe likes to put a couple tablespoons in a glass of water and drink them. This completely grosses me out because it turns into this slimy gelatinous blob of ickiness.  I prefer to sprinkle mine on salads or eggs. They also mix nicely into hummus, yogurt, and smoothies!

Long story short, if you aren’t eating chia seeds, you should start! 🙂

  1. I just bought my first bag of chia seeds about a month ago and have been mostly putting them into yogurt. (I generally eat Greek yogurt at least daily.) I don’t know if I’ve noticed any huge performance benefits, but I’m happy to get vegetarian Omega-3s whereever I can. 🙂

  2. I love chia seeds! I usually put them in my oatmeal/yogurt in the morning… I’ve only tried chia pudding once and found it kinda funky haha but then again, I’ve never been a fan of “pudding” lol

  3. I eat chia seeds…I put them in greek yogurt, shakeology shakes (even though they already have some in it), on an english muffin/waffle with peanut butter/almond butter…good stuff! I hope you get a new bag soon! 🙂

  4. Omg, chia seeds have changed my life! I can’t believe I went almost 26 years of my life never knowing you could buy and EAT them! Lol

    I add them to EVERYTHING! Love ’em in pancakes, and smoothies, and they take overnight oats to a whole OTHER level! 😀

  5. I’m a big fan of Chia seeds, and put them on EVERYTHING! Salads, yogurt, cereal, veggies, pasta, etc!
