I need new shins

Does anyone else have issues with shin splints? I never did before the last year or so, but they have just become a constant nagging issue. Sometimes they go away for a bit, then sneak back up. I feel like I have tried everything possible to help them, but nothing seems to work!! FRUSTRATED!!

I was so concerned about my left one a few months ago, that I completely stopped training and hadn’t run the entire 5 weeks before the NYC 1/2 marathon.  But as soon as I started running again, they were right there.

I feel like this is just something I am going to have to live with, and usually they start feeling better after the first mile or two, but they are seriously driving me insane!!

Ok…thanks for letting me vent- if anyone has any suggestions other than rest, ice, compression, stretching, please let me know!

Not much has been going on this week. I have been taking it easy on the workouts because of the aforementioned shin issue and I want them to feel good for Sunday’s 11 miler.

I’ve actually been away for the last couple days visiting these cuties in Long Island (I use to nanny for them when they lived in the city).

Many of these were consumed in order to keep up!

I just got back this morning and Joe left last night for a bachelor party in Las Vegas…yikes! He comes home Sunday night, but I leave Sunday afternoon for a work thing in Houston, so I won’t even see him until really late Monday night.

  1. All of my suggestions you stated but maybe you need to try a different pair of shoes? May be worth a try if you haven’t already done that. I hope they remedy themselves soon…that is frustrating…especially since you’ve already tried most/all things usually suggested. :-/ I had to stop at Starbucks for a pick me up too today, lol. That stinks you and Joe keep coming and going…hopefully you’ll be on the same schedule soon…you should do an awesome date night on Tuesday. 🙂 Good luck with the 11-miler on Sunday if I don’t talk to you before then.   2. I’m sorry your shins are bothering you! I’ve been getting shin splints in certain small muscles in my shins during my marathon training. I’ve found that some aggressive self-massage with a tennis ball helps in combination with icing, but I had one muscle that was really bad and eventually got a prescription for som anti-inflammatories for it, although I probably just could have taken over-the-counter naproxen and been fine. I hope that you can find something that helps your shins feel better!

    • Naproxen definitely does help, but I usually end up taking it after a run to help with the aching. Tennis ball massage is a good idea too- I use The Stick (not as often as I should), but I think a tennis ball might get in there closer to the bone. Thanks!

    I would maybe try a new pair of shoes girl. Have you though about getting a sports massage too? That may help. Just keep taking it easy, and be patient. ((even though I know I’d be pulling my hair out w/ frustration, lol)). Sorry that you and Joe’s schedules aren’t balancing out with one anothers. Here’s to hoping Monday night gets here quickly for the two of you ❤

    • Thanks! I miss him 😦 We do have a week long vacation with my family coming up in a week, so I have that to look forward to!
      And, you might be right about the shoes. I love my Boston’s because they are so minimalist, but maybe they aren’t quite supportive enough for me…hmmm. Might have to do some research!

      • I have been fitted and I’m totally neutral, slight arch…nothing crazy. This is before I ever had issues with the shins though and my addidas worked so well for so long. I should probably get re-assessed; feet & gait can change, right?
