War Horse & Il Violino

Today we met Joe’s family at Lincoln Center to see the theater production of War Horse. I’ve not read the book or seen the movie, and was actually not sure what to expect of this at all. It’s had great reviews and I’ve heard it’s amazing in the way it’s portrayed on stage.

We all met at the Lincoln Restaurant for a drink before the show. I had a glass of Presecco and Joe had a Blue Point Toasted Lager.

Then, off to the theater we went!

Our seats were so close to the stage, you could see the actors spit when they talked! haha. The show was sad and a little graphic at times. There was a lot of crying from the audience 😦  The way they did the horses and made them move was really amazing though. I was thoroughly impressed! I definitely wouldn’t have chosen this show of all the options on Broadway, but I thought it was great and had a really good time!

After the show, we walked up a few blocks to Il Violino for dinner. It’s a small restaurant decorated with old violins and famous violinists on the walls. I started with a glass of pinot grigio and some yummy bread with olive oil and balsamic.

We ordered a couple things to share for appetizers. A meat and cheese plate (obviously I dominated the cheese) and a mozzarella and tomato salad. So many things on the menu looked delicious!

Sea scallops were calling to me and Joe went with the Salmon special.

Pan seared with spinach, zucchini, squash, onion, and carrots. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!

Salmon wrapped in pancetta over polenta in a mustard sauce. Joe loved it! I took a bite of the salmon and polenta minus the pancetta, but it tasted really meaty to me, so I wasn’t a fan.

I wasn’t going to get a dessert until I saw gelato covered in espresso on the menu…I mean, how can you not get that?

A scoop of vanilla gelato came in a little dish with a tiny carafe of espresso that you pour over yourself.

This turned into a melty espresso soup that was to die for…I want more just thinking about it now!

Joe got a fresh summery dish of lemon sorbet. It was so crisp and tart – very refreshing.

Everything about the meal and the service was absolutely fantastic! I have no complaints and I would definitely go back! 4 out of 4 pickles for Il Violino!
